How Geodes are Formed
|
Geodes are created from hollow areas in the ground. These can be caused by animals, roots, bubbles, and by other natural means. Water and minerals flow into these cavities leaving behind crystal formations. They can be hollow or solid depending on how long the geode has been building up the crystals. Most geodes range from two to six inches, but some geodes can measure over 2.5 ft long!
The word "Geode" comes from Latin which means "earthlike" because of their round shape. Geodes can contain different crystals and colors such as quartz, calcite, amethyst, agate, and more. In the US, most geodes originate from Iowa as it is well known for their geode mines. In fact, the geode, is Iowa's offical state rock.
