Break Your Own Geodes

Breaking your own geodes is a great fun activity and learning experience.  A dull rock on the outside surprises you with crystals on the inside!  Fun for kids to learn about geology and to be an archeologist for a day.

What You Need to Know About Geodes
Not all geodes are alike.  To have the best experience, you want to have geodes with great rewards.  Many kits that sell break your own geodes come with small rocks and duds that can be disappointing.  These are usually geode kits that sell a range of sizes from 1 to 2 inches with the majority on the smaller size.  Just look at the reviews of some common geode kits and you can see that they end up with small geodes that don't contain any or much crystals.  Not very satisfying to the treasure hunter!

How to Break the Geodes
The most common recommended way of breaking a geode open is by putting the geode in a old stock and then hitting them with a hammer outside.  This way will break the geode open into pieces and let you see what you find inside.  However, many people want to slice their geode in half instead of having it in many pieces.  To do this, an adultcan use a diamond saw to cut the rocks for a nice smooth face on each half.  This way, you can have a nice looking geode specimen.  If you do not have access to a diamond saw, a hammer and chisel can be used to break the geode in half.  Use the hammer and lightly chisel the geode all the way around the circumference until it breaks in half.
